1864 Tiemann Minor Operating Instruments Type found in leather pocket kits       The following parts are the kind you would expect to find in a Civil War issued pocket minor surgical set with folding knives and instruments with tortoise shell handles in a roll-up leather case.  These particular instruments were in a Tiemann marked case and the instruments had patent dates of 1864, which should be of some use in differentiating later or early kits from those sold or bought during the war years from Tiemann.         Tiemann maker names marked on various instruments.  The patent date is not shown, but is near the mark on the base of the instrument near the handle.   Silver-Nitrate caustic holder (used to 'treat' syphilis and STD's)     Metacarpal folding saw   Tenaculeum Gum lancet   Scalpel Bistourey knife   Buck's anuriseum needle showing thread/wire suture holes in the shaft of the needle     Vaccinator comb Vaccinator lancet - comb   A 'port meche' is an instrument used to insert a tampon-like pad into a fistula or wound to help stop hemorrhaging
