c. 1836-1841 Trepanning Set by Peter Rose Peter Rose was a famous surgical instrument maker located in New York at various locations on William St. from 1822 - 1845.  This set has an address of 130 William St. , which would have been from 1836 - 1841.   Rose supplied some of the more notable surgeons in New York with instruments.  (From Edmonson; American Surgical Instruments: an Illustrated History). Peter Rose cutler 1829-30: 72 William 1831-35: 35 William 1836-41: 130 William 1842: 129 William 1843: 111 112 William surgical instruments 1844-45: 111 112 William and 61 Elizabeth surgeons' instruments   Reference: Edmonson This rare and famous maker trepanning set, which measures (8 x 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.), is heavily braced with brass corner pieces and the case is made of rose wood with dark maroon velvet lining.  There is a frilly braded lining around the inside of the upper lid, which supports the edge of the divider between the upper and lower half.  The name plate is not engraved, but appears to have been removed at one time and it would be interesting to see what the other side.  The original key is present.   The trade label is notable because it shows the hand written building number on William as is noted on the surgery set by Rose.
