Instruction sheets shown here were included with an automatic pistol in the factory shipping box. Dates can be misleading as some pistol models were produced for many years. While condition matters, finding an original of these historical papers in any condition is desirable, especially in light of the reproductions on eBay. Handwritten Colt company notes mentioning 'Albert Lepper' ' or 'R. S. Peck' refer to local printers in Hartford, Conn. who did contract printing for Colt. It is assumed a Colt employee (neat female hand-writing), did the ordering from Albert Lepper or Peck & Co. A circle logo for Peck & Co. Printing is found on various Colt paper during the 1900 to 1930 time frame.
R. S. Peck & Co. / Hartford, Conn.
Note: Many of these sheets, showing volume ordered and the date, may be much later than the first issue of the pistol. Best method: use Form # (first used in 1911) and business address to determine approximate original date of publication. Ogle's 'Book of Colt Paper' is indispensable when trying to accurately date these instruction sheets.
If it says 'Printed in U.S.A., then that particular sheet is post-1929. However, previous printings may have started anytime after 1900. Colt's various business names give a date range of production. Example: Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. was used prior to 1945 with the Firearms Division being used 1931 to 1939. Small Arms Division was used a short time from 1929 to 1930, then resumed in 1940 to 1947. Confused? Get a copy of John Ogle's book on Colt Paper. |
